Absence management can improve productivity and reduce unemployment figures
Unemployment is currently at 7.8% in the UK. It is important for businesses to address a number of issues to help reduce this figure or at least to avoid any continued increases in this figure. Many business solutions, such as time, attendance and absence management software, can help businesses ensure staff retention through securing their job by increasing their productivity. This can lead to a growth in business and the need to recruit more staff, which can potentially generate a reduction in unemployment figures.

Sickness absence is falling but studies disagree on the reason

Absence management: Can new technology predict when employees are going to be off?
There is no shortage of statistics on rates of staff absence. And systems are now being developed that not only record absence data but actually predict when an employee will next be off. The danger is that such information can be open to misinterpretation.

World Cup Sickies
According to a survey by FIFA sponsor Continental Tyres, 1-in-4 UK workers plan to "pull a sickie" to watch the World Cup this June.
That breaks down to more than nine million U.K. employees calling in sick for an average of 3.5 days during the month-long tournament.
To ditch work, soccer fanatics will use more than 31,850,000 excuses as they call or text their bosses with fake illnesses.
The most commonly used ailments will include an upset stomach (28%), vomiting (23%), or headaches (20%). One in six workers will lie and say their car won't start or they suddenly have food poisoning.
How will your organisation maintain employee attendance and productivity levels, as well as avoid sickies as staff get behind their national team?

Fit note replaces the sick note
Doctors are from today able to inform employers of the duties an employee is able to perform in a move which scraps the 62-year-old sick note system.
Introduced as part of the creation of the NHS in 1948, GPs used sick notes to decide whether a patient on sick leave for more than seven days should or should not return to work. They have now been replaced by 'fit notes' through which doctors outline how an employee may be able to perform if temporary changes are made to their working conditions.
The Department for Work and Pensions claims the introduction of the new notes, formally known as 'statements of fitness for work', will boost the UK economy to the tune of £240m by 2020 as a result of the reduction in the amount of time people take off work.

National Sickie Day
Did you know that it's National Sickie Day today! According to research Monday 1 February is the worst day of the year for absenteeism and puts pressure on all organisations across the UK to manage the impact of unauthorised absence.
The cost of absence to any organisation is significant and even for SMEs should not be underestimated. Latest research on absence from the CIPD (2009), for example, highlights that the average cost of absence per employee is £692 per employee every year, with staff absence accounting for 8.4 working days for each member of staff annually. This represents 3.7% of the total working time. Employee absence is a significant cost to 90% of businesses, according to the survey.
For the UK economy as a whole this represents a whopping £17.3 billion.
